Edgar Allan Poe Essay -- Edgar Allan Poe Structure Structuralism

Edgar Allan Poe Though an innumerable amount of interpretations of any given text might be drawn from a variety of perspectives, a structuralist analysis of two of Poe’s works help place their symbols within a theme related to myth and heroism. Peter Barry attempts to define structuralism succinctly by narrowing it down as â€Å"the belief that things cannot be understood in isolation—they have to be seen in the context of the larger structures they are part of†; he goes on to add that â€Å"meaning is always an attribute of things, in the literal sense that meanings are ATTRIBUTED to the things by the human mind, not contained within them† (39). One might attempt to further narrow this idea (ironically) by quoting the famous line, â€Å"Everything is relative,† which is to say, all reality is contingent upon the perceiver. The context in which that reality is being perceived becomes the point of interest, so that, in regard to literature, â€Å"there is a constant movement away from the interpretation of the individual literary work and a parallel drive towards understanding the larger, abstract structures which contain them† (Barry, 40). The question becomes not what, but how. It is interesting, then, to further define the crux of this theory in search of what conclusion a modern structuralist reading of a pre-structuralist author, namely Edgar Allan Poe, might yield. Structuralism itself is defined as â€Å"modern† but through its own origins â€Å"following the widely discussed applications of structural analysis to mythology by the anthropologist Claude Là ¨vi-Strauss† can be attributed to relatively recent intellectual movements, which then reflect back on the writings of Poe, perhaps evidencing inspiration for the theory in the firs... ...l and follows its progression panel by panel. Toni Morissons The Bluest Eye Essay -- Toni Morisson Bluest Eye Essay

Toni Morisson's The Bluest Eye Toni Morisson's novel The Bluest Eye is about the life of the Breedlove family who reside in Lorain, Ohio, in the late 1930s (where Morrison herself was born). This family consists of the mother Pauline, the father Cholly, the son Sammy, and the daughter Pecola. The novel's focal point is the daughter, an eleven-year-old Black girl who is trying to conquer a bout with self-hatred. Everyday she encounters racism, not just from the White people, but mostly from her own race. In their eyes she is much too dark, and the darkness of her skin somehow manifests that she is inferior, and according to everyone else, her skin makes her even "uglier." She feel she can overcome this battle of self-hatred by obtaining blue eyes, but not just any blue. She wants the bluest of the blue, the bluest eye. Pecola Breedlove is an innocent little girl who, like very other young child, did not ask to be born in this cruel world. It is bad enough that practically the whole world rejects her, but her own parents are guilty of rejection as well. Her own father, who is constantly drunk, sexually molests his daughter more than once. The first time he has sexual intercourse with his daughter, he leaves her slightly unconscious, and lying on the kitchen floor with a guilt covering her frail, limp, preteen body. The next time he performs the same act, but this time he impregnates her. Of course, the baby is miscarried. This is obviously not a love a father should be sharing with a daughter. This act displays hatred in the worst way. Her mother's rejection is subtle yet potent. When Pecola tells her mother about the molestation, Mrs. Breedlove does not believe her own flesh and blood. Pecola calls Pauline Mrs. Breedlove... ...n females read this book because I am very curious about how they would react. I feel that they could relate to, and benefit most from this novel, and I bet every young African-American female can relate to at least one character in this book. Toni Morrison was born in Lorain, Ohio in 1931. Her birth name was Chloe Anthony Wofford. She attended Howard University, where she received her B.A. She also received an M.A. from Cornell University. Besides being a writer, she teaches as well. She is now a professor at Princeton University. She is known for such novels as Sula, Beloved, and Tar Baby. She has won numerous awards, such as the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved and the Nobel Prize for Literature.1 Works Cited: 1Kennedy, X.J., Dorothy M. Kennedy, and Sylvia A. Holladay. Racism in Nazi Germany :: Ancient Rome Roman History

Racism in Nazi Germany Explain how Hitler made use of racism to carry out domestic and foreifn policy between 1928 and 1941 Throughout Nazi Germany in the period 1928 through to 1941, racism was utilized by Hitler, and in turn his Nazi party, most predominantly to secure Hitler?s position as dictator, and secondly to unite the German people against a common enemy, which would lead to a united powerful state, ready and able to exert its national will. Whether or not his aims were totalitarian in nature is debatable, however, his aims for racial purification and domination over Eastern Europe are made obvious before Hitler?s assumption of power, primarily in the racist crude writings of Mein Kampf, and even from Moellers? Des drittes Reich from the 1920?s. It can be said, therefore, though Hitler may not have been successful in achieving a totalitarian state, he may certainly have desired it. Constantly, it is made obvious, through his use of racism in both Domestic and foreign policy that Hitler?s ultimate aim, was total power, both for himself and his master race - the Volksgeminschaft. Hitler's use of ra cism is continually evident from the beginning of his comings to power, through till his attack on the Soviet Union in June of 1941. Racism, was initially used by Hitler to identify his sympathizers, and most predominant to unite the German people again public internal enemy number one - The Jews. Anti-semitism, anti-communism and attacks on several other minority groups ranging from slavs to democrats, provided Hitler with the Stab-in-the -back theory post World War One, and provides and excuse for defeat with the treaty of Versailles. Being that Nazi philosophy is essentially social dawanism targeted again the Jews and Bolsheviks, providing valid excuses and moral reasons for any attack on, or failure of the German race, the fittest of them all, against minority groups was a legitimate claim and justification for exclusion of these peoples. Hitler used racism to appeal to the pre existing bitter and aggressive side of German nature, thus securing his position as dictator and reuni ting his people. Securing his position as the all powerful dictator, or FÃ ¼hrer, is central to all of Hitler's policy decisions, be they foreign or domestic, and this was achieved through his, and the Nazi?s use of racism. Initially, Hitler used persecution and hatred of minorities such as Jews and communists to identify his sympathizers and supporters throughout the Government and general population, mainly young people and big business, and utilized this power, and appeal to secure his position as chancellor and later president of a united Germany.

War on Drugs and Prison Overcrowding

The War on Drugs and Prison Overcrowding David Turner CCJ 1020 October 06, 2012 Overcrowding is one of the most difficult challenges that prison administrators face in the United States. There are many factors that that affect the constant flow of people being processed into today’s prisons. The â€Å"war on drugs† has led to more arrest and convictions that any other crime. The money spent on the prohibition of drugs and the law enforcement presence to stop drug trafficking raises high into the billions of dollars. The cost to care for these individuals while incarcerated has cost taxpayers billions over the years. When looking at today’s statistics of the â€Å"war on drugs†, the supply and demand is greater than it has ever been. From 1995 to 2003, drug offenses accounted for 49% of the growth in prison population in both state and federal institutions (McVay, 2011). According to the Department of Justice, in 2004, almost 30% of drug offenders in state p risons were serving time for possession, while close to 70% were serving time for trafficking. There is a strong following across the United States from state groups and services rallying against sentencing and pushing for drug counseling programs. Legalization for marijuana has resurfaced in the November polls in some states. In many prisons, marijuana convictions fill the cell blocks more than any other drug offense. In 1933, America re-legalized alcohol, and the 21st amendment re-legalized its production, distribution and sale. Alcohol consumption and violent crimes fell instantly (Goelman, 2011). As a result, the American criminal justice system felt slightly organized.Crimes that were being committed due to alcohol smuggling and manufacturing had almost came to a complete halt. President Richard Nixon’s first budget for the â€Å"war on drugs† was $100 million dollars (Associated Press, 2010). If only that was the budget these days. Published reports state that the Obama Administrations budget for 2011 was $15. 1 billion dollars. Most of the money is budgeted for law enforcement and drug interdiction purposes. When Nixon first started this movement to find drugs, it was for counseling and for drug treatment programs. PresidentReagan reinvented the â€Å"war on drugs† phrase by changing the goal from rehabilitation to a law enforcement presence (Jane, 2011). Since the early 1980’s, the number of people being sentence to state penitentiaries have double, even tripled in some areas. The idea of, if you lock them all up, then the crimes will stop approach has not worked over the years. The numbers have consistently gone up in both the budget and those being incarcerated. Many states have lowered drug crimes from felonies to misdemeanors and resorted to longer, more structured probationary terms.Though this is a step in the right direction, it is not enough to put a dent in the budget or free up space to house more dangerous offender s in our prisons. Businesses around the globe use simple business practices to figure out supply and demand. If there is a demand in an area, then a store is opened and the goods are sold. If the business is not doing well in sales, then the store closes. If we (America) can stop the urge, the addiction, or demand for certain drugs, then the business owners will go elsewhere. Drugs have powerful, addictive properties and our brains are just as powerful.Addiction is a powerful word and is an even a more powerful feeling. Not everyone locked up in prison is addicted to drugs, but the ones who are enable these same people to sell them drugs. If we focus on counseling and fighting addiction, we will see the budget and prison overcrowding drop. I am a firm believer in what might have worked 20 years ago, might not work in today’s society. With prisons being filled on a daily basis, the budget for fighting the â€Å"war on drugs† growing larger, and the demand for drugs is à ¢â‚¬Å"higher† than ever, America has got to start a new approach for this fight.Since this is being called a â€Å"war on drugs†, then we need to change our attack strategy and try something else. Through drug treatments and counseling, we can lower numbers in all major categories and put the money in other areas where it is needed the most. References McVay, D. A. (2011, January 26). The Prohibition of Cigarettes

Writing 101 17February2011 The Prohibition of Cigarettes I thought about the question, â€Å"Should the manufacture of cigarettes be prohibited† and I don’t really believe that saying â€Å"yes† to this question would be of benefit to those who are pro cigarettes or against cigarettes. The question basically appears to make out that the manufacture of cigarettes, and only cigarettes, should be prohibited. There are many campaigns against the usage of cigarettes as we can see television commercials clearly stating that smoking causes cancer or attempting to deglamorize cigarettes. Many people have seen the surgeon general warning on a pack of cigarettes claiming that cigarettes can cause â€Å"lung cancer† or â€Å"emphysema. † In a study performed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the study shows that between the year 2000 and 2004 that about 443,000 people in the USA died from a variety of illnesses due to cigarette smoking (citatio n 1). This would certainly be a motivation and a convincing reason to halt the production of cigarettes but we should analyze this proposition more in depth.I believe that the term â€Å"cigarettes† is too narrow to solve any problems, as not everybody smokes cigarettes nor would the halted production of cigarettes solve any public health problems. Tobacco is a better term as it is much more broad and would include cigars, snuff, dip, and other forms of tobacco that contain nicotine. Nicotine is the suspect found in cigarettes that causes an addiction but nicotine can be found in the other forms of tobacco.Stopping production of â€Å"only cigarettes† simply means that current cigarette users may, switch to another nicotine source, quit smoking, or choosing an alternative nicotine source such as nicotine gum or the patch. Having been a tobacco user in the past, I know most certainly that many people will not just outright and quit. Prohibiting the manufacture of cigare ttes means that it will be illegal to produce cigarettes but how about the selling or the possession of these products? It will be necessary to outlaw these points of trade if the intended action is to meet with success because if selling and possession are legal then it will be difficult to regulate the circulation of cigarettes within the nation. Though the making of cigarettes are deemed illegal by the government, the creation of cigarettes will certainly not halt as now cigarettes are almost equivalent to that of the marijuana drug trade as there will probably be many people growing and producing cigarettes. The police cannot arrest these people for possession or selling of cigarettes and cannot obtain a justifiable clause to obtain a search warrant to prove that the person may be manufacturing cigarettes which is deemed illegal. One last point would be the idea that cigarettes can be grown in another country such as Canada or Mexico and brought through the border with no problems as possession is not illegal. There are actually quite a few positive reasons to keep the cigarette trade going rather than shutting production down.I have been around the world through my time in the navy and I have seen one of the most popular brands of cigarettes â€Å"Marlboro† just about everywhere that imports tobacco. Take note that I mentioned the term â€Å"import† as in those countries do not make â€Å"Marlboro† cigarettes in their own country. Marlboro is a popular brand of cigarettes made under Phillip Morris which is a subsidiary company to Altria incorporated. Marlboro, in itself, holds about 42% of retail shares of cigarettes in the USA (Citation 2).This is certainly an income to our nation and though I’m uncertain of how much is made through the exportation of cigarettes; it certainly has an effect on the economy which is currently in a depression. Have you ever looked around base and noticed those supposed â€Å"smoke pits† or a designated smoking area? Those â€Å"smoke pits† seem to be next to just about every building on base. Did you notice how many stores sell cigarettes or even the cigarette vending machines here in Japan? How about in movies? Doesn’t the popular stereotypical â€Å"Bad Ass† person in the movies usually smoke a cigarette?Even though direct advertisement through television or magazines is prohibited, cigarettes are still very popular and many people do smoke them and not just in America. The cigarette trade is most likely a very profitable trade based on it’s popularity and demand which would probably put it as a very valuable source of income for the United States. Based on the many cigarette brands I’ve seen from traveling the world, I’ve seen that cigarettes are quite likely a major export for the states as many f these brands are originate from the States. I personally do not deny of the risks caused by cigarette smoking and myself being an ex-smoker, I certainly do not encourage smoking but the plan of prohibiting â€Å"just† the manufacture of â€Å"only† cigarettes does not reflect the best interests of those that are for cigarettes or against cigarettes. Cigarettes are a form of tobacco and the halted production of only cigarettes means that a regular cigarette user will move to another source of nicotine rather than quit.I know personally that quitting is a long process (I still chew nicotine gum four months after quitting). Prohibiting the manufacture of cigarettes in the United States but allowing the sell or possession simply means it will be produced where it’s legal and the carried over through the US’s borders with no issues. We can’t deny that cigarettes are very popular worldwide and thus contribute to the United States economy as a popular export since many popular brands such as â€Å"Marlboro† are made in the United States.

How far can metrosexual men go?

Metrosexuals are well-educated, sensitive and straight urban dwellers keeping touch with his feminine side. They usually go for manicure and could even have their hair taken care of by stylists and not the barbers. These men love shopping and even wear jewelry. Their bathroom counters are full of male products that include moisturizers and some makeup. They work on their physiques at fitness clubs as opposed to gyms and this appearance gets them a lot of attention that delights them. Metrosexuals are mostly found in large cities especially media centers. There is however imitations and experimenting among men in other smaller cities. These men have a great concern for how they appear. Their lifestyle displays characteristics stereotypically linked to gay men. â€Å"Metrosexuality† traces its origin from an article by Mark Simpson in â€Å"The Independent† in 1994. He described a metrosexual man as one who has high income and lives or works in the city, where he can find the best shops. Metrosexual men are proving to be among the best markets for cosmetic products in the decade. In 1980s, these men were only found in fashion magazines, TV ads or gay bars. Later in the 1990s they were allover and even doing their shopping. The trend The term’s popularity rose after Simpson wrote another article â€Å"Meet the metrosexual. † Euro RCSG Worldwide, an advertising firm, immediately adopted this term for marketing studies. Some careers have been known to attract metrosexual men. They include music, media, table waiting and modeling. Popularity of this metrosexuality rose following increased integration of gays into society and a decline in taboos towards those deviating from masculinity notions. Shortly after, Canada, Belgium, some US states and Holland enacted legislation for gay marriages.Metrosexuality aroused a lot of curiosity when a marketing agency tried exploring the changing face of American men. According to this research titled, â⠂¬Å"The Future of Men: USA,† there is a new clique of men who reject traditional male roles and do as they please no matter what the society thinks about them. The media and male magazines such as Maxim and FHM have greatly influenced men to become metrosexuals. They have devoted a lot of their space to fashion. They encourage the men to dress fashionably. Homosexuals are also believed to have contributed towards metrosexuality.Despite metrosexuals being totally heterosexual, the homosexual movement helped in the society accepting an effeminate lifestyle and characteristics. Consequently, the society is now very comfortable with homosexuality. Displaying it on television is no longer a taboo since the heterosexual males are now comfortable with the homosexuality culture. Metrosexual men are more sensitive and effeminate than their fathers were. They are have shown willingness to push the restrictive gender boundaries defining what in masculine and what is feminine and still co nsider themselves â€Å"real men.† Metrosexual men are secure in their sexuality. Pedicures and facials do not make them less heterosexual or less masculine. Research has revealed that 43 per cent of men are not satisfied with their general appearance. Sixty-three per cent of them are particularly not happy with their abdomens. This leads to their seeking the services of cosmetic surgeons for minor aesthetic operations. Abdominal liposuction for wiping out love handles has become very popular. Lip augmentation surgeries and Botox injections have also become very popular among men.Opting for cosmetic surgery among men is usually a last resort in improving their personal appearance. They dress well, groom well and move to cosmetic surgery. These procedures include laser skin resurfacing, chin augmentation and eyelid surgery. Sometimes metrosexual men’s preoccupation with personal appearance can take to the extremes. It can interfere with schoolwork, career and relationsh ips. This is where a therapist’s advice should be sought to create a healthy and more sensible approach to personal appearance. All men, regardless of their sexual orientation, are developing a big interest in their personal appearance. They visit hairdressers instead of barbers. They also avoid the use of soap because they say it is harsh on the skins, go to the gyms instead of sports, and find it difficult to decide what to wear. They spend a lot of time on the mirror, in boutiques and bars instead of pubs. They also dance at night clubs and go to salons. Marketers have responded to this trend by dropping the macho element from all the products that target men. Tough male images have completely been done away with even on car and beer advertisements. Fashion chains for men are increasing. Some women’s stores like Esprit have launched products for men as well. Men’s magazines have their fashion coverage since more ads are coming in. Fashion and grooming adverts f or FHM, a men’s magazine, have been increasing for the past three years. Two decades, vanity, skin care and male fashion were identified with homosexuals. This has now been abandoned. Even the workplace has experienced changes for men. The growing number of white collar workers brings with it the need for good appearance. For effective competition in the work environment, one must take care of his body, cut his hair neatly and dress well.Even beer marketers are using a less masculine tone in communicating with men. They have also changed the how they buy their electronic goods, cars and home ware. In buying of electronic goods, for instance, men are no longer interested in the traditional male attributes such as gadgetry and technical features. Instead they follow what could be called female attributes such as the store’s environment, service and other intangible attributes. Vehicle advertisers are emphasizing more on the people driving and their feelings and not the v ehicle’s physical specifications (Trubo, 2008). Proponents’ viewTraditionally, men are supposed to avoid feminity, restrict their emotions, disconnect sex from intimacy, pursue achievement and status and be self reliant, aggressive and homophobic. However, statistics have shown that pursuing achievement and status has lost its importance compared to how it was in the past. Restricting emotions and disconnecting emotions from intimacy is no longer important to men either. Men do not find sexual freedom enthralling any more. The modern man shows less avoidance of femininity and embraces attitudes and customs that were stereotypically a reserve for women.Masculinity has had a considerable shift over the years. The modern concept of masculinity is very different from that of ancient times. Certain aspects of modern style and behavior perceived as feminine were actually masculine in the past. They include jewelry and makeup. Feminity came to conquer masculinity and the latt er became restricted (Simpson, 2002). Metrosexuality is seen as a counter-reaction against this change. Some men have a feeling that they are too restricted within their gender roles. It is a way of establishing more equality between men and women by shifting towards androgyny.Cultural and attitude changes towards masculinity have led to changes in the conservative masculine norms. This can often be seen in the media, especially TV shows Culture and the environment had to change for the metrosexual men to start appearing. According to Simpson, gays gave the initial prototype for metrosexuals. Media has played a major role in portraying metrosexuality as straight. It has bought them out as heterosexual men keeping touch with their feminine side. They coordinate colors, are deeply concerned about exfoliation and are manscaped.Consumer culture encouraged men to go shopping, buy magazines and spend freely to improve appearance. Consumer capitalism has helped in doing away with unmoistur ised, repressed and old-fashioned heterosexuality in favor of metrosexuality. The conservative, self-denying, straight and modest man did not do much shopping. He had a duty to earn money to be spent by his wife. He was substituted by a different kind, who has more interest in his image than his so called identity. This metrosexual man is more concerned at how he is being looked at.This man has been so much sought by the advertisers. Some people are of the view that metrosexuality is a phenomenon that just occurred naturally. Metrosexuality will very soon become our everyday vocabulary. Being metrosexual should not be treated as wrong. Those against metrosexuality use stereotypes to argue out their stand. Such stereotypes expect men to be insensitive, cold-hearted, thug-looking and grungy, which is not the reality. Ironically, many respected icons like Diddy, Usher and Kanye West are actually metrosexual but are role models to many. When we look at individuals who embrace metrosexual ity, we notice that they do not attach themselves to gender norms of the society. But clearly, metrosexuals are making an attempt to be different and find who they really are. This mindset is as old as mankind. Every society has a small group of people who look at what is normal for only a specific time before creating a different â€Å"normal† to express themselves. In most cases, this bears fruit in cinema, art and music. In the society, men and women expected to follow specific guidelines for their gender.Failure to following these rules qualifies one to be labeled as an outcast. Despite the society accepting metrosexuality in men, it is still hesitating in allowing heterosexuals to create a unique guideline to be followed. The opponents’ view By the society accepting and integrating homosexuality, many strange cultural customs have been created. On the other hand, metrosexuality has caused even greater havoc but silently. It has been argued that metrosexuals act ga y, causing social interaction problems since they are straight with identity issues. This eventually starts affecting even family lives.Divorce rates are on the increase since men cannot keep their word and women having to take up men’s jobs. Great leaders world over have encouraged strong family institutions. They argue that these are the foundations of strong civilization. But since families are breaking up, the society will also follow the same course. Opponents assert that metrosexuality has had a great impact on dating nowadays. Dating is today a complicated ritual more often than not ending up in heartbreaks rather than providing a learning experience for those involved. Worse still, many cannot find dates while others play around with other people’s hearts.Others engage in dangerous sexual behavior. It is argued that if women acted like women and men like men, the laws of attraction would take effect and make relationships interesting and healthy. Men must be de cisive, driven but understanding while women must be caring, delightful, free and loyal. This balance can never find a replication in any other way (Serio, 2006). It is common for men and women to go the same salons, wear the same jeans, watch sports together and share beer. They even watch the same movies. Opponents of metrosexuality argue that this phenomenon spells disaster. They refer to it as â€Å"unisexification. † These opponents have linked unisexification to the society’s downfall. They further claim that as men behave like wassies and women become more aggressive, a platform is created that causes family break-ups, gender role reversal and dysfunctional relationships. Kids end up growing in mental and emotional problems. This could lead to more drug abuse and violence. Earlier civilizations knew it. They depicted that the balance is vital for opposites. They argue that if all things were the same, life would be unbearable.Gender equality does not exist. Gende r roles exist and there is a whole lot of difference between the genders. This is in terms of their biological, mental and emotional attributes. These attributes are the foundation of a strong society. They balance and stabilize families, relationships, work, schools and homes (Serio, 2006). People should therefore be themselves. Men should act like they ought to and ladies should behave like ladies should (Serio, 2006). Conclusion The issue of metrosexuality is complex and controversial. There are two arguments about this issue. On is a strong proponent for metrosexuality while the other is opposed to it. One thing remains clear though. The society has changed tremendously over the ages and will continue changing. Some aspects of the society that were so important in ancient ages have now found themselves in oblivion in the modern world. This is because they could not work for today’s society. Traditionally, men and women have particular gender roles. It is evident that these roles have been changing with time to keep up with the world’s advancements. Also, men were stereotypically associated with certain attributes. These were meant to distinguish them from women. They included acting tough, cold-hearted and generally in control. Women were also assigned specific attributes that identified them as ladies. They included being soft, caring, loyal, and supportive and so on. In today’s society, these notions cannot apply in their entirety. This has given rise to the concept of metrosexuality. Metrosexual men are only trying to find themselves. As a matter of fact the future is metrosexual. Gone are the days when men and women alike were restricted to particular gender attributes.People should be allowed to be themselves, and metrosexuality is one such way. There is no doubt therefore that metrosexuality has a future. Reference Coad, D (2008) Gender, Sexuality and Sport Suny Press Flockner, (2004). Metrosexual. Emece Editores Serio, L. The single-gender classroom is making a newfound acceptance

The single-gender schoolroom is doing a newfound credence among pedagogues looking to give their pupils the border on high-stakes trials. Bing an early adoptive parent of single-gender schoolrooms Mr. Rich Buford looked at the current research for a manner to implement this into his schoolroom. Bing a advocate of this manner of learning Mr. Buford sees no job with this instructional manner every bit long as there are safeguards taken to guarantee that one sex is given the same advantages as the other. One survey that Mr. Buford looked at came from American Secondary Education in which they point out that looking at other states around the universe could give us an penetration into the result of a single-sex schoolroom. Another writer stops merely short of denouncing any grounds that supports the thought, and claim that it is no different than dividing based on race ( Rycik 2008 ) . However there is some grounds that proper direction and appraisal can hold a immense impact on pupil ac complishment ; particularly for male pupils. Another survey Mr. Buford came across stated that most instructors will prefer one gender over the other based upon outlooks of the gender. They will pass more clip with the male childs on male child topics ( math, scientific discipline ) and with misss on miss topics ( reading and linguistic communication ) ( Abbeduto & A ; Symons pg.3 ) . It was Mr. Buford ‘s experience that worlds like to plume themselves in their achievements and when a instructor sees that a pupil is really strong in a topic it is really satisfying. However when a instructor sees a pupil fighting with a topic it can be hard to travel through those turning strivings with the fighting pupil. Peoples love to win and detest losing, and a pupil that is non acquiring it seems to do the instructor feel like they are unqualified as a instructor so the instructor may unconsciously disregard it. This is shown in one survey where the instructor has a fellow instructor clip them on the sum of clip they spend on misss vs. male childs and the consequences were conclusive 80 % to boys and 20 % to misss, during a male child topic ( math ) and he even knew he was being timed ( Sanders & A ; Nelson pg.11 ) . While Mr. Buford was making his research he wondered if the schoolroom was all right to hold college girls but the direction and appraisal could be done with confer withing from another instructor from the opposite sex. In the 1990 ‘s California tried a similar pattern but it failed ( Protheroe 2009 ) , but this does non hold to be the destiny of today ‘s reformation of the public school system. Mr. Buford believes it is a great thought that could assist a big sum of kids receive the proper instruction they need. It seems that most of the resistance comes from females that remember the educational inequality of the yesteryear. However the same inequalities are found in today ‘s schools it is merely non talked about because it is the male childs who are acquiring the short terminal of the stick. 80 % , yes 80 % of school dropouts are male childs ( Tyre 2005 ) . In this modern twenty-four hours schooling is greatly geared towards misss and their acquisition manners, a s immature work forces are shown the door to go forth school. This is non the mistake of the misss it is merely that the bulk of schools are taught by adult females in 1986 it was at 69 % female instructors, in 2005 it was 82 % and still turning ( Feistritzer, & A ; Haar, 2005 ) . A immature male child does learn otherwise than a miss, that is a given, but with over 70 % of LD pupils being male it is no admiration they have a difficult clip larning the manner a female would. Teachers teach the manner they learn ( Tyre 2005 ) , so if the instructor is female it should be a given that she would be best suited to learn females. This is non to state that females can non learn males, and the contrast of sentiment is greatly needed in all topics. However it would be really hard to larn Chinese from person who merely speaks Chinese. It does non do the instructor a bad instructor or the pupil a bad pupil, nevertheless pupils would be best suited if a instructor who besides spoke English was traveling to learn them Chinese. This linguistic communication barrier could be fixed by holding a male instructor in the schoolroom learning the male childs and a female instructor learning the misss. But with budgets being patched together it is non executable to propose that every schoolroom have two instructors. Mr. Buford wanted to cognize more if this could even work and if so how could it be done in the confines of the school system regulations where he was learning. This looked like an chance to acquire to cognize other instructors better. He wanted to acquire a point of position from a fellow instructor who happened to be female. He asked Mrs. Nash the 9th class Psychology instructor to assist him on something, she said yes. They met during his be aftering hr and went over her appraisal and he asked if she would do any alterations to it. That following hebdomad Mrs. Nash came back to Mr. Buford with the same appraisal but asked different inquiries. Mr. Buford passed his appraisal out to the male childs and Mrs. Nash ‘s appraisal out to the misss. None of the pupils knew that there were different trial, and when he graded them he was really pleased with the consequences. The misss did better than of all time before in his History category normally good known as a female strong topi c. With the transition of Title IX in 1972 adult females have seen immense additions in educational accomplishment ; while work forces have seen their additions non merely autumn, but they have been significantly lower than that of adult females. ( Spencer, Porche, Tolman 2003 ) .The inquiry that keeps coming up in hiss research is why? Why are immature work forces self destructing in this new and â€Å" equal † educational age, while adult females are deriving by springs and bounds? This goes back farther than this research has clip to allow, but it starts in the simple school and carries itself on to higher instruction. The foundation of a great pupil starts at place, but besides those first few old ages of schooling have such a great impact on pupils that it forms a permanent feeling for the remainder of the pupil ‘s lives. In simple school the opportunities of holding a male instructor are about 15 % if you ‘re lucky ( Robinson, Gillibrand 2004 ) . This poses no m enace to females but for immature work forces it can be a really hard procedure thought, and moving like a miss. There are clear and distinguishable differences between male and female. Not good or bad, merely different. If you are told 85 per centum of the clip that the manner you were moving was inappropriate so you would likely believe that there was something incorrect with you for holding these thoughts as being desirable. You are told to be quit when you want to speak. You are told to sit when you want to stand. You are told to analyze by yourself when you want to cognize what your friend thinks about job # 3. This is what most immature work forces go through every twenty-four hours in the public school system that was built by females and for females. The male childs do non suit in and they know it ( Frawley 2005 ) . Their manner of being is non wanted in the school and they know it. They are loud, full of energy, and inquiry everything ; it is most instructors ‘ worst incubus. The bulk of instructors are female and so the educational civilization is rather different than from that of a school that would hold been founded by males ( Kirschenbaum 2007 ) . Look at the differences between the public school system and that of a military academy and that is the difference between what a male centered school would look like and the modern school system that promotes muliebrity and devalues maleness. Since the transition of No Child Left Behind ( NCLB ) the United States public school system has been the mark of reform from all sides of the political aisle. The American populace has been told that our school system is in shambles, and that America is losing its prestigiousness around the universe as an educational human dynamo. What NCLB does will non assist the public school system, but instead it will damage it beyond fix, it punishes schools with low trial tonss by taking off funding to that school ( Schroeder 2001 ) . The logic to this act is foolish at the least. To state to the populace that if your school is proving ill we will cut support to your school and give it to a school that is executing good and this will go forth no kid behind. Most grownups can state you that male childs and misss are different, and the differences do n't halt when you leave school. Men and adult females think, act, hear, see, and smell otherwise ( Tyre 2005 ) . The standard schoolroom is really girl friendly which is non a bad thing if you ‘re a miss. However the primary ground for this survey and its significance of it is the immense disparity between male childs and misss when it comes to education, more specific is primary instruction ( Wills 2007 ) . When you foremost acquire introduced to education you have small else to compare it to and the first few old ages have an impact that can find whether you will be a success or a failure ( Campbell 1997 ) . The instruction system wagess subject, conformance, and attentiveness qualities that most parents and instructor know are much more familiar with misss than male childs. Boys violin, drama, and battle. ( Poe 2004 ) . This impression that male child ‘s behaviour is incorrect or looked down upon as where the miss ‘s traits are what are thought to be wanted by the instructor in the schoolroom creates an ambiance of ill will and bitterness. In general most instructors would wish a pupil that raises their custodies, work softly, and choruss from break you would be speaking about the traits of a female ( Flannery 2006 ) . This is non to state that male childs are incapable of run intoing these outlooks for a instructor, but how it is perceived by the instructor will wholly depend upon their sex ( Myhill and Jones 2006 ) . Research As Mr. Buford looked through the different articles in being in the library at UCM he noticed some reoccurring subjects that are seemed to be the footing for his statement that the construction of the modern school puts maleness on test while doing feminist traits deemed desirable and conventional. He looked at the unintended effect of the feminist motion the school system and its gender prejudice towards female personality traits. Then there is NCLB which because of the landmark statute law there is such a new involvement in individual gender schoolrooms as a manner of progressing all trial tonss for a school territory. If boys think and procedure otherwise than misss, how can at that place be a fit criterion in schools that are at odds with the manner boys do it? Mr. Buford besides looked at the biological differences and the new engineering and its impact on the altering perceptual experience that there is more of a familial make-up of societal and larning traits of male and females than what was before perceived as being an engineered trait. So why now? After all these old ages of doing schools gender impersonal and endeavoring for equality among pupils why are we looking at turning back the clock and traveling to a single-gender schoolroom? It is because of the failure of male childs in the modern schoolroom. With merely 70 % of male childs graduating high school and merely 40 % traveling on to college there is a immense job that if non corrected early could be black for our state ( Poe 2004 ) . Sing that this has been an issue for many old ages it is in our history that gender equality was non ever that equal, so females have a right to be leery of a alteration that could hold an impact on them. Mr. Buford asks if the recoil of feminism to do a jeer of our immature work forces so that they are non equipped for the hereafter? The best solution to all jobs is to happen the win-win scenario that all pupils are able to accomplish to their possible. From the 1940 ‘s until the 1970 ‘s the feminisation of the public school system has put males at a disproportional disadvantage ( De Haan 2010 ) . With legion empirical surveies that have looked at the impact on gender in the schoolroom it was no easy undertaking to sift through the rubbish to happen something worthwhile. With the transition of NCLB in 2001 schools started looking at ways to better trial tonss, and one thought that took root was the individual gender schoolroom ( Gillis 2005 ) . There have been many individual gender schoolroom pilot plans since 2001 ‘s transition of NCLB. Most seem to come from countries so despairing for better trial tonss that they try anything to assist their school. In Mississippi the pilot plan had small significance in alterations to prove tonss when compared to their opposite numbers that were in coed schoolrooms. However there was a immense difference in the sum of subject referrals given to boys in the individual gender schoolroom ( Gillis 2005 ) . It is known by most male instructors that immature male childs will move a spot otherwise when in the presences of immature ladies. As we ( male instructors ) were one time immature male childs and can certify to this type of behavior alteration in forepart of females. Another pilot plan in Florida showed that male childs in coed schoolrooms tested for province written exams merely 37 % passed, but the male childs who were in individual gender schoolrooms had a humongous 86 % base on balls the same test ( Flannery 2006 ) . Since there was ne'er a right to vote motion for males, nor a civil rights motion for white males the bulk of educational reform has looked at the impact on females and minorities in the last 50 old ages ( Warrington and Younger 2000 ) . This has made happening research a one sided undertaking that is hard to divide from historical generalisations that there is no demand to look at the impact on males because they have historically done good in standardised trials. However when you look at the graduation rates and college entryway statistics you see a different image and it looks black for immature work forces ( Martino, Mills, and Lingard 2005 ) . These differences are merely acquiring worse as the old ages base on balls on, is it any surprise that boys have been holding a hard clip in school when it is taught in a feministic manner. Bing that primary schools are typically taught by female pedagogues the ideals that are identified as maleness are normally deemed unwanted ( Martino, Meyenn 2002 ) . When immature work forces are made to experience as they, or their thoughts about what is good or merely does non suit with the modern school civilization ; how can you anticipate much else? Work forces are make bolding and brave and in the universe of male childs these are traits that are more than a stage of who we are it is a badge of award to be brave. In the eyes of females this is merely butch bunk that needs to be eradicated like a malignant neoplastic disease that is unwanted. As boys mature and get down to experience like a existent foreigner in their school they go one of two ways. Either they conform to the school, or they venture off and ne'er to return. There is small that needs to be said as these immature work forces know that they are non wanted in school, this is non an alibi for the high dropout rate but instead a existent account of the disaffection that immature work forces feel when they enter school ( Tyre 2005 ) . Biological Differences of Males and Females So are at that place biological differences between the manner males and females learn, or are these differences institutionalized into immature people at a clip when they are most acceptable. The feminist motion had a much larger moving ridge than what was first seen. The changeless debasement of the male function theoretical account as an egomaniac that needs to be fixed is bombarded to all of us through the T.V. ( Rycik 2008 ) . Young male childs are different than misss, but is at that place something else at drama when you have about 75 % of all kids that are labeled as acquisition disabled are male childs ( Poe 2004 ) . This would likely non be a important statistic, but most of those that are labeled end up in particular instruction categories. From this initial label there is a slippery incline that pupils go down and normally ends with long-run harm. The overexploitation of psychiatric drugs on immature work forces is making living deads out of these male childs and has done small to assist work out the job of bad behaviour ( Rycik 2008 ) . The job is non the immature work forces, but the impression that there is something incorrect with them because they do n't sit still, work softly, or behave likeaˆÂ ¦well like misss ( Poe 2004 ) . There is more to being a cat than most females might cognize ; work forces ( and male childs ) have a learned behaviour to maintain emotions to themselves. This is at odds with females as they are prone to opening up about their feelings ( Flannery 2006 ) . There could be a batch of jobs in the pupils ‘ life and it gets exacerbated by a instructor or parents who want this child fixed. They have good purposes but their proactive solution really makes affairs worse. As a instructor Mr. Buford gained an apprehension that most jobs will work themselves out this is nature at its finest. When we mess around with Mother Nature we get pupils that are stoned out of their head, because they were told that they have a job and it is non their mistake they merely need drugs ( Sadker 1999 ) . The job that was being investigated was whether male child and misss would larn better in a individual gender schoolroom environment vs. the now standard college girl schoolroom, or something of a loanblend that Mr. Buford is suggesting for his schoolroom. The writer looks at a six or so different research from assorted organisations that have findings that are in support of single-sex schoolrooms and opposed to the thought. The topics from one survey were 5,000 eighth-grade pupils from New Zealand ; another was two high-schools in Australia one all misss one all male childs ( Haag 2000 ) . In the New Zealand survey they used a longitudinal survey that had controlled for single features of socioeconomic position, and the type of school the pupils went to. The Australian research was a 10 twelvemonth survey in which the pupils passage from single-sex schoolrooms to coeducational schoolrooms ( Haag 2000 ) . The New Zealand survey after using the controls back into history found there was no difference in accomplishment from a individual gender schoolroom or a coeducational schoolroom. When controls were in topographic point they found a large addition in achievement peculiarly in misss. The Australian survey says that the pupil ‘s self-identity at first declined but after 5 old ages went back to normal degrees ( Haag 2000 ) . The decisions to these two surveies were that co-educational schools are merely every bit effectual as individual gender schools. The article goes on and points to other research that is more positive in its findings on individual gender schools, but it is summed up in the sum-up when she says â€Å" Finally, the research, while inconsistent in its appraisals of whether single-sex instruction is â€Å" better † than coeducation for misss, does uncover countries of consensus on specific indexs, which may function as get downing points for farther research into how single-sex schools affect educational results. â€Å" ( Haag pg 2 ) . Very small figures are shown as in statistical informations that they present in the article in which they give an overview of the research that was already done. They do little in looking at the impact on male childs which would be a failing in the research. One cardinal strength is the survey in Australia in which they follow a group of male chi lds and misss for 10 old ages and expression at their results from the passage between these two different options for how we teach our pupils. Looking at all of the research on this topic you get a sense that this has been tried before and looking at landmark surveies gives us insight into the possible effects that a individual gender schoolroom would hold on pupils. This topic is non a new thought it has been practiced for centuries and known that dividing pupils on the lines of gender was seen as a existent game modifier ( Parker, Rennie 2002 ) . Looking at the different ways scientific discipline is learned by male childs and girls the survey in Australia has found its manner across the pool and given the United States a difficult expression at why they are so different. The survey done by Parker and Rennie looked at pupils between the old ages of 8 and 12 across 10 different schools. They spent two old ages roll uping informations and looking at peculiarly the difference between male childs and girls trial tonss in math and scientific discipline. They stop short of stating that there was a significant difference in the classs but the importance of the survey was that it showed a direct correlativity in the assurance that the pupils had in the topics when the antonym ‘s sex was non in the schoolroom ( Parker, Rennie 2002 ) . Decision This research gives us insight into the ideas and thoughts of how best to turn to the educational spread that exists between male childs and misss. Feminism brought manner to major reforms in how schools would be taught ; no longer would adult females hold to take a back place to work forces and their aspirations. The overexploitation of feministic ideals in the public school system has made instruction favour the behavior traits of females while holding everything that is masculine as unwanted. Research by many bookmans inquiries why male childs are falling behind particularly with consideration to college attainment. There have been encephalon scans done on male childs and misss and scientifically turn out that boys think, act, listen, and see otherwise than misss. Single gender schoolrooms are nil new in respects to instruction, but the oncoming of feminism brought with it the impression that male childs and misss are the same. Newly discovered functional magnetic resonance imagings make it possible to state that biologically they are really different, and perceive life in a different manner. Male childs have ever been seen as the Rebels, the criminal that thread that all right line between condemnable and vigilance man. So the self-image that immature work forces have about themselves is traveling to be really different from that of what a female thinks. For case most immature work forces feel that it is their responsibility to support their female parent from any and all menaces. That is why immature males will contend one another for naming each other ‘s ma a bad name. This is likely unlogical to most females and drives decision makers and instructors alike up a wall, nevertheless if you were to inquire most immature males in privaten ess they would understand that those are evidences for a battle. Male childs are taught that contending is a really barbaric signifier of job resolution, yet to those same male childs it is deemed worthy and shows a natural line of leading. The masculine nature of male childs is self apparent from early on ; they think and act in a manner that can merely be understood by other males. So so I ask why are most marks of maleness removed from school and deemed unwanted. Whether right or incorrect is non the inquiry. There is nil incorrect with being male and our traits should be accepted or even channeled into something that can still hold the immature adult male experiencing likeaˆÂ ¦well a MAN. Possibly they do n't believe like a female, or move feministic and that should non be evidences for a diagnosing for ADD or to be put on medicine. We are all alone, larning and behaviour is no different in that each kid has a set of conflicts that they must get the better of and it is the occupation of the instructor to assist them mount their mountain. We can non logically cognize what tools they will necessitate to mount that mountain unless we take stock list of what they have and what they need. This requires a considerable sum of clip that honestly most instructors do non hold. A male instructor has a better apprehension of male pupils demands than that of a female instructor, merely because he one time was a immature male child and thinks and Acts of the Apostless likewise. This is non a sweep on female instructors at all it is more demoing that the deficiency of maleness in the school system is the biggest job that is confronting male childs and their educational ends.
